The Hidden Genius of Hoarders

July 11, 2023

A&E's long-running series "Hoarders" profiles the lives and properties of people suffering from compulsive hoarding disorder. And while cleaning up properties that can hold several hundred tons of trash is difficult, cleaning up the minds of the owners presents a more serious challenge.

The foundation of Hoarders consists of important, sweeping questions about individual rights and liberties -- and buried within Andy and Becky Otter's hoard is a complex web of Isaiah Berlin's positive and negative freedoms. What are our obligations to help others, and how far should we go if it means restricting their freedom? To what degree should others be free from the consequences of someone else's bad choices? And what do we do when two people's individual liberties collide?
